I personally really liked it, it's well done, a few things that could have been on a slower pace to develop like the "lust" or love from "Tarftuffe" to Elmire...but overall a very very good movie.
Romain Duris is excellent and of course Fabrice Luchini excels.
Bravo Laurent Tirard.

I liked this film. At the end I felt like it had seemed too objective and incoherent. But some context by a Godard expert put things in perspective. Godard was working out his personal ambiguities about the French-Algerian war. Also, Godard looked upon his films as attempts at films, as experiments. Why repeat what everyone else had been doing for 40 years. In that light, the film became something different. Once my expectations of how I should *feel* about a film changed, the experience of seeing Godard's film changed.

Amis,

We're in the process of putting together the program for The 2007 Anti-Corporate Film Festival (Oct. 19-21, www.countercorp.org), and are inviting cinema-savvy folks such as yourselves to recommend French (or Francophone) films that include some elements or themes on how corporations affect our lives.

These can include feature-length and short documentaries and narrative (fictional) film, as well as animation, experimental works, etc. — pretty much anything you can think of with the elements/themes mentioned above. The only caveat is that foreign-language films need to have English subtitles.

If we end up screening a film that you suggest, we'll give you TWO FREE TICKETS to *any* film at this year's festival. (If two people suggest the same film, the first suggestion we receive wins the tickets if we end up screening it.)

The fastest way to send us your suggestions is directly to the festival at submissions@countercorp.org. You can also post your suggestions in reply to this post, but our all-volunteer staff cannot check all of the Tribes we are members of every day (unlike e-mail).

Merci, and look forward to hearing your suggestions!

as an agent for film distribution, i have -over the years- accumulated good contacts in the business. Time to use them more... personally (and creatively). I would like to find a screenwriting partner, and get a script ready for Cannes at the earliest, next AFM at the latest. I write about 5 script coverages a week, and my criticism of other people's scenarii has led me to face... continuous writer's block. I REALLY need the stimulation and inspiration a collaboration can provide. My first language is French, so i'm open to a French or English collaboration. We would only be able to meet in person a few days each month, and most of the collaboration would have to happen via phone or i.m. If you're interested, send me some info about yourself, including which movie (precisely or more vaguely) you would like to write, which films/ scripts have inspired you etc. Please do not contact me with an already finished script you're trying to place. Send all info directly to my tribe address (no need to respond to this post)

I just wrote this up on my film blog. I hope it's ok to re post it here... I loved L'Enfant and highly recommend it. It's subtle, but if you've seen the Dardenne brothers' films, then you know how they work. These guys are 3 for 4 at Cannes, I think.

In L'Enfant, a young couple struggles to keep it together when a newborn enters the picture. Shot, as were the brothers' previous films "Promesse" and "Rosetta" in a French city lost somewhere in the industrial past but home nonetheless to important family and social tradition, the film's genius can easily be overlooked and mistaken for the banal and trivial detail of a realist's take on daily life. A bicycle is ridden, stairs are climbed, a scooter takes a corner, a beer served. Or does or protagonist ride a bike, does he climb the same flight of apartment stairs, again and again, does he bank a scooter into the same street as if it's a street he knows as well as any other he's been confined to, a beer is served or a beer is requested and the bartender pours our customer another round.... French author of the Nouvelle Roman, Robbes-Grillet, created an art form perhaps similar to that of the Dardenne brothers. The films of Cinema Verite and Italian Neorealism were also attempts to approximate the Real while remaining within fiction. "As if" film-making.
But the Dardenne brothers have a take of their own though. It involves the affect and scene upon which the film has been made. L'Enfant was inspired by the sight of a young mother who frequently took her baby on walks near the filming of "The Son." The film-makers and crew noticed this woman, and in particular the troubled and abrupt manner in which she pushed the baby carriage in front of her. This scene, repeated every day, took on significance with each repetition, as if the repeating of it deepened its meaning while making it more obscure at the same time. The brothers decided to turn this into a film.
And so the it is that the kinds of impressions life makes on the these sibling film makers are the kinds of expressions on which their films are constructed. Stairs are not climbed, nor does a protagonist repeatedly climb the same stairs. Rather, the climbing of stairs is repeated. The drinking of beer. The riding of scooter through streets known. The Dardenne brothers had their actors do these things over and over so that they themselves would do them as if they lived in this town, under these circumstances, in this reality. Directing their actors to be present to the context, social and material, spatial and temporal, in color and in temperature, in their own physical experience, strikes me as a masterly approach not just to film making, or to acting, but to narration also. For the actors are now able to narrate the story in gesture, their actions becoming the indicative material of the film's narrative instead of story elements, plot points, and so on. And we from that we get an emotional reality, instead of a narrative reality, or the reality of event, action, situation. Emotional reality -- that is the reality of affect, the movement of feeling, mood, the intensity, pressure, the breaking point, anticipation, the muteness and explosiveness, of human experience. I don't know if these guys are alone in this particular technique. As a viewer I find it incredibly powerful.

François Ozon (born November 15th, 1967) is a French writer and director whose films are usually characterized by sharp satirical wit and a freewheeling view on human sexuality.

He has recently achieved international acclaim for his films 8 femmes (2002) and Swimming Pool (2003).

François Ozon is considered to be one of the most important young French fllm directors in the new “New Wave” in French cinema such as Jean-Paul Civeyrac, Philippe Ramos, Yves Caumon.

Having studied directing at the French film school La Femis, Ozon made several short movies like Une robe d'été (1996) and Scènes de lit (1998) that already display his defining style.

His motion picture directing debut was Sitcom (also 1998), which was well-received both critically and by audiences.

After the Fassbinder adaption Gouttes d'eau sur pierres brûlantes (2000) came the movie which made him a name outside of France, 8 femmes, starring a dream team of such icons of French cinema as Catherine Deneuve, Fanny Ardant, Isabelle Huppert, and Emmanuelle Béart. With its quirky mix of musical numbers and murder mystery and a production design harkening back to 1950s Hollywood melodramas such as the ones directed by Douglas Sirk, this film became a huge commercial success.

In 2003, Swimming Pool starring Charlotte Rampling and Ludivine Sagnier was released, considered by Ozon a very personal film that gives insight into the difficult process of writing a novel or screenplay.

François Ozon is not particularly eager to label his sexuality, but he is generally considered to be gay. At any rate, gay or lesbian characters and plot elements are featured frequently in his works.

In 2004, he directed the movie 5x2. In 2005, he debuted his latest film "Le Temps Qui Reste" at various worldwide film festivals.

According to François Ozon himself, he will soon start working on an 'English period film'.

Recently, I viewed "A Band Of Outsiders" (although Tarrantino got the translation correct when he named his production company A Band Apart) and this, his seventh film, still delights and lifts the cinematic spirit high above the clouds of conventional filmmaking.

The scene where the three of them (I love you still, Anna Karina!) suddenly get up and dance The Madison is as cool a moment in motion picture history as when Travolta and Thurman get up and do the twist in "Pulp Fiction."

And the style this Goddard film has marked many an imitator; from Jarmusch's "Stranger Than Paradise" to QT's "Reservoir Dogs." It's also somewhat obvious that in 1964, the year "A Band Apart" was released, The Beatles were also in love with Goddard's work and had Richard Lester emulate his "reporter" style camera work.

I'm interested to hear what Goddard films YOU are particularly fond of?

Anyone going to this?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This Thursday marks the commencement of
TO MURDER THE CINEMA: VISIONS OF MARGUERITE DURAS
presented by San Francisco Cinematheque.
This series will screen at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts on Thursdays May
26, June 2 and June 9. For the complete description of the entire series,
please visit http://www.sfcinematheque.org/programs.shtml#325
A prolific writer, Marguerite Duras (1914-1996) first made her mark in
cinema when she wrote HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR (1959) for Alain Resnais. In the
mid 1960s she began to direct due to her dissatisfaction with the cinematic
adaptations others made of her texts. Her films, like her writings, are rent
with the violence of desire and shaped by her critical and innovative
approach to form and voice. Rarely screened in the United States, Duras¹
work hasn¹t shown in the Bay Area since her death. Cinematheque¹s
three-evening series is presented with the generous assistance of the
Ministère des Affaires Etrangères Français and the Consulate General of
France in San Francisco.
TO MURDER THE CINEMA
VISIONS OF MARGUERITE DURAS
program 1:
7:30 pm - NATALIE GRANGER
9:00 pm - MARGUERITE, A RELECTION OF HERSELF
(each program ticketed separately)
NATALIE GRANGER (1972) is a story of two women (Jeanne Moreau and Lucia
Bosé) who worry about a daughter¹s violent behavior at school, listen to
radio accounts of a murderer at large, and are visited by a traveling
washing-machine salesman (Gérard Dépardieu). Less formally experimental than
later works, it refuses conventional narrative payoffs and powerfully evokes
the emotional bonds between the two women and the tensions which pervade
their off-screen world. The hour-long MARGUERITE, A REFLECTION OF HERSELF
(2002) is an eloquent portrait of Duras by her collaborator and editor
Dominique Auvray. It incorporates a rich array of archival materials from
Duras¹ childhood in what is now Vietnam and throughout her long career as
both writer and filmmaker.
WHERE:
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
701 Mission Street (at Third)
So I teach high school French, and this year I decided to show movies in order from pre-history through modern time. So far I showed The Real Eve from Discovery Channel, showing how people migrated, etc, to show the migration of languages. After that I showed a (really boring) documentary about the Caves of Lascaux. With each time period, I have the students make posters illustrating something from that time. Anyway, now we're on the early middle ages, Gaul, Roman Empire, etc, and the only thing I could think of was Gladiator- just so they could get a feel for the time period.
So for Charlamagne or Clovis- can anyone think of any movies I could show? I'd do a movie or a documentary, either one. After Charlamagne I'll show one of the Joan of Arc films, then I was thinking Man int he Iron Mask, Three Musketeers, then something on the Revolution, Les Miserables, something on Napoleon, WWI (VEry klong Engagement should be on DVD by then) WWII (Au Revoir les Enfants) then Indochine and something modern. So any ideas for any of the time periods?
I hope this is coherent. lol
Late August, Early September (1998)
Olivier Assayas created a wonderful movie about emotions about feelings, love friendship and death. How can he develop so many multidimensional characters in just one movie, show such a complexity of emotions? We are far from the mediocre habitual (French) movie that piles up betrayal and flat pretty faces. Maybe because the places, the light are familiar to me, it all feel so real, the situations are realistic and the characters exist outside the field of the camera.
Beautiful music by Ali Farka Touré and amongst an excellent cast, Virginie Ledoyen performs like we could never have suspected from her mediocre acting in 'The Beach' or 'Bon Voyage'
Most people will not like that movie but this is the best I have seen this year.
Even after more than two hours of busy story telling that never felt long to me, the movie is still an abbreviated version of the book. Jeunet can be forgiven many short cuts required by the medium and the necessity to appeal to his target audience.
Less obvious to explain are the many deviations from the original story. Gone is the snow and the cold, also Mathilde Paintings. Although a romanticized Brittany is a an excellent cinematographical choice, Japrisot warned us against the misunderstanding of ‘Cap Breton ’in his book. Gone are a lot of characters including Mathilde and Manex real and adoptive Parents. Mainy changes includes Mathilde debilitating infirmity, but what is definitely missing from this story is the duration, the long wait and the story feels more like a well ran investigation than a painful and agonizing search.
Like the above mentioned simplifications, Jeunet compromise and attenuate the pain and the suffering, the gore of the original story. The blood and guts have the artistic quality of an A. Kurosawa rather than the shock of a Q. Tarantino or T. Miike. The exaggerated use of sepia with only brief relief of B&W documentary-like scenes is too blunt. With few exceptions the many characters are of single dimension.
Jeunet attention to subtle details will remind you of Amelie. I laughed however when the schoolgirl Mathilde carries a resembling but actually anachronistic school bag. (it is an Italian 'Il Bisonte' brief case). Many actor have brilliant but frustratingly brief performances, to name a few: Gaspard Ulliel/Manex (Strayed) Denis Lavant (Tuvalu/Les amants du pont Neuf) Marion Cotillard -as a convincing Tina- (Jeux d'enfant) and a Jodie Foster more French than any other character.
Like in Gus Van Sant's Elephant you are given the illusion to experience life from the point of view of a teenager.
Etienne Cassard regarde peu les autres, parce qu'il se regarde beaucoup lui-même et qu'il se sent vieillir.
C'est l'histoire d'êtres humains qui savent très bien ce qu'ils feraient s'ils étaient à la place des autres mais qui ne se débrouillent pas très bien à la leur, qui la cherchent tout simplement.
Etienne Cassard doesn't really pay attention to anyone because he's too busy looking at himself and feeling himself age.
Pierre Miller, a writer, thinks that he will never know what succes feels like until the moment he meets Etienne Cassard.
Sylvia Miller, a voice professor, believes in her husband and his talent but doubts the intentions of her student, Lolita, until the day she finds out she is the daugher of Etienne Cassard, an author she admires.
This is a story about people who know what they would do in someone elses shoes but in their own but they have no idea what they are doing in their own.
With Emmanuelle Béart, André Téchiné (Director), Philippe Sarde (Music) ,Agnès Godard (Cinematography)
This is another French movie after the forgettable "Bon Voyage" that relates the debacle caused by the invading German troops in 1940 France. This movie is also about the behavior of the displaced rather than the almost invisible Germans. In my humble opinion the value of this movie is in the Cinematography, the Music and an impeccable performance by Emanuelle Beart. She is beautiful Actress no doubt, but I have never seen her realize her potential as in she does here in the character of an overwhelmed mother.
The 20-year-old Gaspard Ulliel (in Brotherwood of the wolf / Le pacte des loups) is an actor we will see again.
Un autre film Francais qui, comme le pietre "Bon Voyage" se situe pendant la debacle de 1940. Ici non plus le centre d'interet est le comportement des deracines et non pas les Allemands quasiment invisible. Pour moi la valeur de ce film se tiens dans la photographie, la musique et l'excellente performance d' Emanuelle Beart. Elle est belle certe, mais jamais n'a porte a fruition son potentiel comme dans ce role d'une mere debordee par les evenements.
Gaspard Ulliel, 20 ans (in Brotherwood of the wolf / Le pacte des loups) est un acteur a suivre.
Has anyone else seen this. It's not a French movie it's American I think. But it is set in France and has a lot of French included. I enojoyed it, don't watch it if you want something upbeat however. It is about a sister (Naomi Watts) who moved to Paris and married her lover. Her sister (Kate Hudson) comes to visit her just in time for her husband to walk out on her and their daughter (who is around 7). The remainder of the story is about French customes, how they veiw Divorce, what the women can't do but the man can in France after a divorcce. I was suprised. They do speak a good amount of French, but there is also a balance of American Humor. Good movie all around.
Anyone else have any thoughts?
Has anyone else seen The Five Senses??? It's a little older, maybe nineties or eighties... not that that's old but whatever... anyway. One of the characters is French so SOME of the dialogue is in French. There's also a smattering of Italian in it, but none of that is subtitled. In any case it's a truly wonderful film. I got so wrapped up on the characters that I was still kinda worried about one of them when the movie was done. So if you haven't seen it yet, rent it as soon as you can. I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't enjoy it.
